General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

GDPR
General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) replaces the current Data Protection Act. It prescribes a whole set of new and updated responsibilities for handling personal data.

Key facts about GDPR:

  • Will apply in all EU member states automatically from 25 May 2018
  • Any organisation that handles other individuals’ personal data will have to comply
  • Tough penalties: fines up to 4% of annual global revenue or €20 million, whichever is greater
  • Designed to give people more control over how their personal data is used
